This is a present from me to you.
On 29/12/2016 at 5.57 p.m., you sent me a message on Facebook with a link to the 50 books by women of colour challenge by Bitch Media. Specifically:
We should make this our new years resolution. I’m looking for next read, so I think I’ll start early. 😉
Omg omg I saw this exact same thing. It was half the inspiration for me, Y, and S’s little book club! Cause we’re reading books by woc toooo ❤ ❤ ❤ great minds
WE. ARE. SOULMATES. ❤
I’m so happy that you sent me that first link and that you pushed me to take on this challenge over 2017. It’s been so much learning and gathering of new knowledge, the sort of things I would have never learnt otherwise. It’s been exposure to so many new places and cultures that I wouldn’t have even known of otherwise. And it’s been so good for our relationship: our quips about our thoughts on these books, constant tagging to new recommendations, and incredibly meaningful conversations about the way these books have changed us have meant so much to me. My friendship with you means so much to me.
So this blog will be a living (insofar as anything online is alive) memento to our beautiful, deep, ever-lasting, continent-spanning, platonic (and yet more meaningful than most romantic) relationship, through these books we know and love. I cannot wait to hear about your thoughts on the books you read over 2017, and I can’t wait to see the new ways we push and challenge ourselves in 2018. I know we want to read more books from smaller countries, without so much emphasis on the US/UK experience, and by people existing at different intersections, and it’s going to be so fun. I’m so grateful to have what we’ve got, and now to have this new avenue for us to showcase our love for each other.
